O Ka `Āina (of the Land) print (18″x24″)

$40.00$90.00

Much of this piece represents the deep roots of the kānaka maoli, or Native Hawaiians, and our connection to the land, or the `Āina.  The Hawaiian word and meaning of `Āina does not just translate to “land” however.

The land holds many energies within and upon it, and that energy flows constantly.  That bond of the Hawaiian people and the Hawaiian lands exists as vitally a part of life as air to the lungs, or water to our bodies.

Not only did we come from the land as a people, but we continue to depend on its gifts of nourishment throughout life.

Kalo, or Taro, is a starchy root vegetable (similar to a potato) that had not only been a staple food for all Native Hawaiians, but also one of the most depended on source of food since ancient times.  Where it was once found on every families’ dinner table, today it is taxed extremely high and has almost became a delicacy of Hawaii.

In the culture, Kalo can be seen similarly to human beings.  We only exist, and grow, and thrive because of the energies, and nutrients of the `Āina and all it provides.  An utmost respect for the `Āina is crucial in all of our survival as a race.  Na kānaka maoli have not forgotten, the `Āina can be just as unforgiving and devastating as it can be beautiful and bountiful.
